The Monkey ranks ninth among the 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals. Recent Years of the Monkey include 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004 and 2016. The next Year of the Monkey will arrive in 2028.

Monkeys are regarded as humans’ close relatives, widely recognized as intelligent, quick-witted, and creative. These qualities are also believed to shape the personalities of people born in the Year of the Monkey. In 2026, Monkey persons will enjoy generally good fortune with no major dangers or crises. However, they may face considerable stress, and experience repeated setbacks. It is a year for self-improvement through hardworking, breaking deadlocks and reaching new heights.

How did Monkey Become a Chinese Zodiac Sign?

There have long been diverse explanations on how the Monkey ranks among the 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals. Four of these interpretations are the most representative ones.

The most widely accepted view is the Time Period Correspondence Theory. Ancient Chinese people divided a day into twelve time slots, with each slot corresponding to one zodiac animal. The period from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. is the ninth time slot. At this time, dusk begins to fall, and most wild animals in mountains and forests return to their nests to rest; but monkeys are at their most active and noisy. Then, ancient people designated them as the representatives of this time slot and therefore the ninth zodiac animal.

The most popular folk tale goes like this: As king of all beasts, the tiger once accidentally stumbled into a hunter’s trap and was tightly tangled in a rope net, unable to escape. The monkey risked its life to bite through the ropes and set the tiger free. When the Jade Emperor, ruler of all gods, selected the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, the tiger earned its place with its great prestige. To return the favor, it warmly recommended the monkey to the Jade Emperor, helping the monkey to join the zodiac team.

Another well-known tale is the zodiac race legend. The Jade Emperor announced that the first twelve animals to reach the Heavenly Court, the supreme immortal heaven in Chinese mythology, would be chosen as the Chinese zodiac signs. Nimble yet playful, the monkey stopped halfway to feast itself with mountain peaches and fell behind. Quick-witted as ever, it immediately took a shortcut and finally reached the finish line ahead of the Rooster, Dog and Pig, ranking ninth.

The last widely spreading explanation stems from ancient people’s wishes. The Chinese word of “monkey” shares the exact same pronunciation with the character of “marquis”, an official noble title in ancient times. Carrying people’s good wishes for steady career advancement and a promising future, the monkey was included in the Chinese Zodiac.

Lucky / Unlucky Signs for People Born in Monkey Year

Much like the 12 Western star signs each having unique traits, every Chinese zodiac animal is assigned a fixed element. The Monkey is matched with the Metal element. To tell what suits Monkey people and what they should steer clear of, it mainly depends on if that stuff complements or clashes with the Metal. To make this simple: Chinese people believe Earth and Water are good for Metal, while Fire harms Metal, therefore colors related to Water such as blue bring good luck to Monkey persons, whereas Fire-related colors like red are unfavorable for them.

Lucky and Unlucky Numbers

Lucky numbers: 1, 4, 9
Unlucky numbers: 2, 7
Recommendations: For important occasions such as signing contracts, job interviews and travel, choose dates that feature the numbers 1, 4, 9 or their combinations whenever possible. Avoid scheduling major events on dates with the numbers 2, 7 or their combinations.

Lucky and Unlucky Colors

Lucky colors: white, gold, blue
Unlucky colors: red, reddish purple, reddish orange
Recommendations: For daily outfits, personal accessories, and home decor, go more with white, gold, and blue, and use less red, reddish purple, and reddish orange.

Lucky Flowers

Chrysanthemums, lilies, and lucky bamboos are the lucky flowers for Monkey persons. They symbolize longevity and resilience, and help boost wealth luck. Placing them at home or in the office can improve overall fortune. Besides, it is advised to stay away from flowers with red tones.

Lucky Directions

Due North, Due West and Northwest are the lucky directions for people born in the Year of the Monkey. They can pick an office workstation facing these three directions to improve work efficiency and attract helpful mentors and allies. When traveling, prioritize cities located in these directions as well. Note that the East is an inauspicious direction for Monkey persons. Therefore, it is advised not to place the bed head facing east, as this may affect sleep quality. Besides, try to avoid staying in this direction for long periods. If Rooster people have to travel to a city in the east, wearing clothes in the lucky colors can help offset the negative influences.

By contrast, they are least compatible with domineering, slow-paced, stubborn, and controlling personalities.

The Three Zodiac Signs Most Compatible with the Monkey

1.  Rat
Rat and Monkey are both flexible and quick-minded, never rigid or overly nitpicky, and they always have endless topics to chat about. Besides, those born in the Year of the Rat are gentle, thoughtful, and accommodating, able to tolerate the playful and freedom-loving nature of Monkey people.

2.  Dragon
Those born in the Year of the Dragon are bold, generous, responsible, and strong-willed. They can tolerate the Monkey’s little willfulness and bring them full sense of security. The two form a powerful match, admiring and supporting each other, rarely falling out, and are perfectly suited for marriage.

3.  Snake
Those born in the Year of the Snake are calm, steady, and meticulous, while Monkey people are outgoing, lively, and charming, making the two sides perfectly complementary. One is grounded and family-oriented, and the other adds vitality and fun to life. They grow more well-matched the longer they stay together.

Zodiac Signs with Moderate Compatibility with the Monkey

Monkey people have moderate compatibility with fellow Monkeys, as well as those born in the Years of the Ox, Rabbit, Horse, Sheep, Rooster and Dog. There are no fundamental personality conflicts between them, but minor frictions may occur and need attention. For example, Monkeys and Roosters are often reluctant to compromise with one another, for both have strong personal pride. All in all, a stable and happy marriage can be achieved with careful commitment to the relationship.

The Two Zodiac Signs Least Compatible with the Monkey

1.  Pig
People born in the Year of the Pig are laid-back and leisurely with a slow pace, content with staying in the status quo. By contrast, those born in the Year of the Monkey are career-oriented, restless, and constantly pursue freshness and self-progress. Monkey people tend to think that Pig people are unambitious and lack goals in life, while Pig people consider Monkey people too impetuous and unstable. The two have totally different life rhythms and outlooks, rarely on the same wavelength in daily life, and are prone to growing tired of each other.

2.  Tiger
Those born in the Year of the Tiger are domineering and highly controlling, always wanting to take charge and restrain their partners. By contrast, Monkey people are born lovers of freedom and refuse to be disciplined. The two tend to clash head-on, often quarreling and unwilling to give in to each other. It is difficult for them to reconcile their outlooks on life and way of getting along.

Careers for Monkeys

Highly flexible by nature, Monkey persons excel at seizing opportunities amid changes. Thus, they are well-suited for careers highly related to creativity, planning, sales, public relations, internet industries, finance, and entrepreneurship.

However, those born in the Year of the Monkey also have shortcomings. They lack patience and the dedication to delve deep into work, tending to give up halfway. Restless and fond of taking shortcuts, they may grow complacent over temporary successes and make wrong decisions. Being overly straightforward and sharp-edged in speech, they easily attract petty people and unnecessary troubles, holding back their career advancement.

Therefore, Monkey people are advised to specialize deeply in one field and avoid frequent job hopping; to temper their sharpness, be discreet in words and deeds, and stay away from gossip and disputes. They should make long-term career plans, abandon opportunistic attitudes, and stay down-to-earth, to achieve steady and long-term career growth.

Finance for Monkeys

The wealth fortune of Monkey persons is closely bound up with their personality and tends to fluctuate greatly overall.

Main Income: Endowed with intelligence and competence, they can earn a decent salary and get stable income in the workplace, with plenty of opportunities for promotion and pay rises. A down-to-earth work attitude guarantees them a comfortable life free from financial worries.

Surprising Earnings: They possess a keen business acumen and excel at spotting business opportunities, helping them gain windfalls from avocation, investments, and entrepreneurship.

Unfavorable Wealth Horoscope: However, they are impetuous in nature, lack risk awareness and tend to take shortcuts, indicating they may suffer financial losses due to blind investment and impulsive financial management, and even fall into a financial crisis. Besides, they have weak awareness of saving, spend money extravagantly, love keeping up with others and pursuing enjoyment, making it hard to accumulate wealth. They also tend to trust others too easily. Due to personal relationships, they may stand guarantor for or lend money to relatives and friends, which often results in bad debts and financial losses.

Advice: Establish awareness of saving and financial management, work out income and expenditure plans, and avoid overspending on credit; abandon the speculative mindset, refrain from blind high-risk investments, and learn to diversify risks; be prudent in standing guarantor for others, avoid large-sum money transactions, and invest in fixed assets like real estate to preserve wealth.

Health for Monkeys

People born in the Year of the Monkey are energetic and generally have a good physical constitution, yet they are prone to ignore hidden health risks caused by poor living habits and emotional problems.

Blessed with a fast metabolism, sound physical fitness, and great adaptability, they are naturally vibrant and highly tolerant of environmental changes. They stay optimistic in mind, have strong resilience against setbacks, and maintain an overall positive mental state.

However, they are irritable with frequent long-term mood swings, which may easily cause excessive liver-gallbladder internal heat, cholecystitis, abnormal liver function and other related ailments. Restless, playful, and adventurous, they lack safety awareness and are vulnerable to external injuries from falls, bumps, and traffic accidents.

Monkey’s Fortune in 2026

Monkey persons will enjoy steady and auspicious overall fortune in 2026. Abundant career opportunities lie ahead; they can easily gain recognition from superiors, with great prospects for promotion and salary raises. In terms of wealth, their regular income stays secure, while windfalls are likely to arrive in the second half of the year. For romance, single Monkey people have good chances of meeting their ideal match. Those already in a relationship should spend more quality time with their partner, temper their temperaments, and avoid conflicts over trivial matters. On the health front, they need to guard against excessive internal heat and insomnia, and pay close attention to safety during trips.
