Guangzhou Weather in April

1. The weather of Guangzhou in April is warm overall, but highly changeable with a mix of sunny and rainy weather. The day-night temperature gap is unignorable. 
2. April is the starting period of the rainy season, featuring short but strong downpours and thunderstorms. The overall precipitation is not very high.

Guangzhou’s climate in April is changeable - one day you enjoy bright sunshine, and the next day heavy downpours disappoint you. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast frequently and pick proper outfits. 

During sunny periods, the daytime highs can reach 25-30°C (77-86°F), with an extreme high temperature of 34°C (93°F). On rainy days, the weather can be significantly cooler, with high temperatures dropping to around 20°C (60°F). When the cold air masses strike, the temperature would also experience a sudden drop, with daytime highs being only 17-22 degrees Celsius (63-72 degrees Fahrenheit). 

Besides, there is a considerable temperature difference between day and night in April, around 6-10 degrees Celsius (11-18 degrees Fahrenheit). On sunny or cloudy days, the difference can be even greater. Thus, layering dressing is essential. 
 April marks the beginning phase of Guangzhou’s rainy season, with an average precipitation of 201 mm from 16 rainy days. The rain is mainly in the form of thunderstorms or strong but brief downpours, sometimes accompanied by lightning and strong winds. During the rainy weather, the visibility can be poor, making the scenery blurry, when is not suitable for sightseeing: for example, you cannot even see the Canton Tower clearly. 

But don’t worry: downpours usually last for just ten to twenty minutes. Just remember to bring rain gear. If it starts pouring, find an indoor area to take shelter for a while or try some indoor activities; you can continue your itinerary soon after. Moreover, it’s much less crowded on rainy days. For instance, in Chimelong Safari Park, whether you want to watch shows or interact with animals, the whole experience goes very smoothly without a long wait in line. 
 April is one of the most humid months in Guangzhou, with an average humidity figure of 84%. Moreover, Guangzhou often experiences a unique weather phenomenon known as “continuous humid weather”: humidity spikes sharply, and the humidity approaches nearly 100%, to the point where water droplets may even form on walls and floors and washed clothes don’t get dry, leading to very uncomfortable feelings. 

Note: This phenomenon won’t occur every year. But visitors should still be prepared if planning to visit Guangzhou in April of 2027.

April enjoys longer and longer daytime hours, allowing visitors to explore the city in a relaxed way. However, due to the frequent rainy days, Guangzhou in April receives very limited sunshine periods, averaging 3 hours per day. Despite of that, if you don’t take sun-protective measures on sunny days, strong UV rays will pay you a lot: the maximum UV index reaches 11. If you want to witness a stunning sunset view, keep the following tips in mind: the air visibility must be high, as golden skies are more likely on clear days. You can also check the forecasts to know whether a perfect sunset will occur. For the best photos, the east side of Liede Bridge is recommended, where you can frame the Canton Tower, Pearl River New Town and the sunset in the same shot. Plus, backlit shots offer the best results. 
 Upper Clothing: Comfortable and quick-dry T-shirts paired with a light jacket made with waterproof material are a perfect combination to cope with the Guangzhou weather in April. 

Bottom Clothing: loose jeans, casual pants or light sweatpants are practical, comfy and stylish. For girls, it’s also advisable to choose a long-sleeved dress paired with stockings, which suits the spring atmosphere. Add a light jacket to stay warm, if necessary. 

Footwear: Due to humid air and on rainy days, the ground is slippery, so be sure to wear non-slip sneakers to avoid falling. Girls can wear short boots to go with dresses. 

Accessories: 
The rainy season makes an umbrella or a raincoat highly necessary. 
Don’t forget to pack sunglasses, sunscreen and a sun hat to protect from strong UV rays on sunny days. 1. Visitors are advised to visit Huanan Botanical Garden, even if the weather is changeable. Here, the greenhouse complex maintains a constant temperature year-round, so it’s unaffected by outdoor weather conditions. You can explore the tropical rainforest and the desert zone with its unique giant cacti during rainy hours. Once the rain stops, head outdoors to admire Mucuna Dirdwoodiana flowers. The blooming season falls from early March to mid-April, so don’t miss the last chance to enjoy these colorful blossoms that resemble little birds. We recommend wearing light-colored clothing for impressive photos. 
2. It’s best to avoid visiting Guangzhou during the Qingming Festival from the 3rd to the 5th of April, 2027. This festival is a minor travel rush period for local tourists, with crowded attractions and soaring travel costs. 
3. As a whole, April is actually a good month to visit the city. Firstly, it is the early period of the rainy season, so the total precipitation is acceptable and the rainfall duration is pretty short. Secondly, the temperature hovers in a comfortable range, perfect for outdoor explorations, but you need to prepare for the humid air. Thirdly, April is a shoulder travel season in Guangzhou except during the Qingming Festival holiday, so you won’t experience overcrowding and skyrocketing costs.
