Year of the Dragon

Among the twelve Chinese zodiac signs, the Dragon is the fifth and the only mythical animal that does not exist in the real life. In Chinese culture, it symbolizes power, nobility, glory, fortune, and success. In ancient times, it was the emperor's exclusive emblem, representing supreme power and majesty. Today, Chinese people proudly call themselves “descendants of the dragon,” reflecting its esteemed status. Recent years of the Dragon include 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, and 2024. The next dragon year will be 2036.

Those born in the Year of the Dragon share some similarities with the animal dragon. They are naturally ambitious, confident, charismatic, energetic, intelligent, and born with a noble aura. Aspiring to great heights, they possess strong creativity and leadership, often achieving success through their own talents and boldness. In 2026, their overall fortune is very positive, with nothing unfortunate to worry about. However, they should be a little more patient with their loved ones.

How Did the Dragon Become One of the Chinese Zodiac Animals?

One story goes that: Long ago, the dragon, without horns yet, lived in the mortal world. He was strong, able to fly and swim, and aspired to become a zodiac animal. He also wanted to replace the tiger to be the king of beasts, which led to a conflict that caused severe chaos in the mortal world. The Jade Emperor, the supreme deity in Chinese mythology, thus summoned both to the heaven. The dragon worried that without majestic appearance as the tiger, he would not leave a good impression on the Jade Emperor. His follower, the centipede, suggested borrowing the rooster's beautiful horns. The rooster refused at first, but the dragon promised to return the horns once he went back to the mortal world, swearing that if he broke his words, he would die. The centipede added that if the dragon did not return the horns, the rooster could eat him. Finally, the rooster agreed. Upon arriving in the heaven, both the dragon and the tiger impress the Jade Emperor a lot, who then titled the dragon king of water creatures and the tiger king of land animals, and selected both as zodiac animals.

However, when the dragon returned to the mortal world, he decided to keep the horns, fearing he would look ordinary without them and lose authority over the water creatures. But because he had sworn to die if he did not return them, he went underwater and never came ashore again. Hearing that, the rooster's face turned red out of angry and it chased the centipede, who immediately hid in the soil to survive. To this day, we can find that roosters have red faces and always eat centipedes on sight.

Why is the dragon ranked fifth? That is another story. The dragon corresponds to the fifth time slot of the day in China’s ancient system of timekeeping, known as Chen Shi, which runs from 7:00 to 9:00. This is the time when the sun rises, the dragon appears in the sky, riding on clouds, and its scales gleam brilliantly in the sunlight. Therefore, it was placed fifth position in the zodiac.

Here is another tale: The dragon is the divine creature in charge of wind and rain. The fifth Chinese lunar month falls in early summer, a busy farming season when crops are in great need of rain to grow. Since the dragon controls the rain, ancient people placed it fifth in the zodiac to align with the month for harvest blessings.

In addition, a well-known tale says that the Jade Emperor decreed the first twelve animals to reach heaven would be selected as zodiac signs. The dragon could have arrived much earlier, but on the way, he saw crops suffering from a severe drought and stopped to make rain. As a result, he was the fifth to arrive.

Years of the Dragon

The Chinese zodiac is on a 12-year cycle, which means there is a Dragon year every 12 years. However, the shift between two zodiac signs occurs on the Chinese New Year, which typically falls between late January and mid-February, rather than the January 1st in Gregorian calendar. For example, 2024 Chinese New Year falls on February 10. Therefore, people born before this day belong to the Year of Rabbit, while only those born on or after this day belong to the Year of Dragon. Lucky & Unlucky Signs for People Born in Dragon Year

Each zodiac sign has a fundamental element according to the Chinese Five Elements theory, somewhat similar to the fire, earth, air, and water signs in Western astrology. The Dragon's primary element is Earth. However, a trace of Water is contained within its Earth element, meaning Earth is the foundation, but Water is embedded within. According to the generating and controlling rules of the Five Elements theory, Fire generates Earth and Metal generates Water. Therefore, colors associated with Fire, such as red and purple, as well as metallic colors like gold and silver, can enhance a Dragon's fortune. On the other hand, Wood controls Earth. Hence colors like green and cyan are Dragons' unlucky colors. The lucky and unlucky numbers are derived from the same principle.

Career for Dragons

Dragon people are naturally gifted leaders. They are courageous, intelligent, and well-suited for important roles that require big-picture thinking and tackling tough challenges. These people are never content to stay in a subordinate position for long. However, Dragons also have some limitations and blind spots. For instance, they can sometimes be overly proud and sharp, which may breed resentment among colleagues and subordinates. While ambitious, a major setback can easily discourage them, leading to escape rather than resilience to get back up and keep fighting. Therefore, Dragons should tone down their overbearing presence, listen more to others, stay humble while being bold in their work. At the same time, they need to cultivate perseverance and endurance, avoid seeking quick success, and hold on through critical moments.

Financial Fortune for Dragons

Dragons are born with good financial fortune, especially lucky in earning regular income. Their abilities and broad vision often lift them into the wealthy class. However, great ambition can lead to financial pitfalls.

In terms of regular earnings, Dragons enjoy steady growth, and the foundations they build up in middle age tends to pay off later. Particularly for those engaged in state-owned enterprises, high-tech industries, finance, or their own business, they gain substantial wealth through good reputation among customers and high positions in workplace.

As for extra gains, Dragons are very willing to take big risks on investments. In younger years, their luck in this area is often excellent, bringing rapid and impressive returns. But without proper risk management, greed can lead to big losses. In areas like stock trading or speculation, their fortunes tend to see dramatic ups and downs.

Dragons usually spend money without a plan and enjoy displaying their social status through a luxurious lifestyle. To prevent a financial crisis, it is highly recommended to invest discreetly in funds or acquire real estate as forced savings.

Health for Dragons

Dragons'health follows a two-sided trajectory: On the positive side, they are naturally robust, have abundant energy and exceptional physical stamina, allowing them to keep pushing forward under high pressure.

On the negative side, Dragons are prone to emotional lows when facing setbacks, often falling into self-doubt. Quick-tempered and prone to overthinking, these extreme emotions can trigger nervous tension, high blood pressure, and heart issues. Additionally, many social engagements lead to unrestrained eating and drinking. After middle age, they are very likely to gain weight and develop metabolic disorders such as high blood lipids and high blood sugar. Therefore, they need to pay special attention to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health, get regular checkups especially in middle and later years, and be cautious about traffic safety. Be especially careful when doing high-risk activities like skiing or rock climbing.

Dragons' Fortune in 2026

Dragons will enjoy favorable and stable overall fortune in 2026. Career opportunities look bright, with chances to showcase leadership and gain recognition. In terms of wealth, their regular income flows in steadily, but they should avoid high‑risk investments and speculation, as windfalls may be unpredictable. For romance, single Dragons have a fair chance to meet someone interesting, though they may need to wait for some time with patience. Those in a relationship should watch out for their pride and temper to avoid unnecessary conflicts. On the health front, they need to guard against stress‑related issues like high blood pressure and heart strain, and steer clear of extreme sports or reckless driving. With mindful choices, Dragons can have a smooth and steady year.
